March’s Book: 1000 White Women by Jim Ferguson

Synopsis of Book: One Thousand White Women” is a historical fiction novel by Jim Fergus that tells the story of May Dodd, a woman who joins into a secret government program to marry a Cheyenne warrior, joining a group of 1,000 white women sent to integrate with the Cheyenne tribe in the American West during the 19th century, as a means to assimilate the Native Americans into white society; the narrative is told through May’s diary entries, detailing her experiences with the Cheyenne culture, her relationships with other women and particularly with the Cheyenne chief “Little Wolf”, while grappling with the complexities of her identity caught between two worlds.
